Holiday traditions and Sacred Cows:

How to welcome the true spirit of the holidays instead of longing for the past

The holiday season has a unique way of stirring up memories and feelings, often bringing a mix of joy and nostalgia. For us older adults, the holidays can evoke a longing for the past, when traditions felt more vibrant and cherished.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of viewing these traditions as "Sacred Cows"—untouchable rituals that must be preserved at all costs. However, it’s important to remember that every tradition we hold dear was once a new idea, created in a different time, reflecting the values and joys of those who celebrated it.

Acknowledging the Past

Traditions are precious. They connect us to our history, our loved ones, and the experiences that have shaped us. Yet, as we gather around the holiday table or light the candles of our favorite festivities, it’s important to recognize that change is a natural part of life. Just as our lives evolve, so too can our traditions

Instead of holding on tightly to the past, consider this: What if we honored our beloved traditions while also allowing space for new experiences? This doesn’t mean discarding what has been meaningful; it simply means expanding our celebrations to include fresh perspectives.

Create New Traditions

Here are some suggestions for blending the old with the new, creating a rich tapestry of holiday experiences that honor the past while embracing the future:

1. Revive Old Recipes with a Twist: Perhaps your family has a beloved holiday dish that everyone looks forward to. Why not experiment by adding a new ingredient or trying a modern cooking method? This can spark conversations about family history and the origins of the dish while allowing everyone to participate in the creation.

2. Story Sharing: Create a new tradition centered around storytelling. Set aside a time during your celebrations for family members to share their favorite memories of past holidays. You can even record these stories to preserve them for future generations, creating a living archive of your family’s history

3. Volunteer: Together: Shift the focus from just receiving to giving back. Gather your loved ones and volunteer at a local charity or community center. This act of kindness not only fosters a sense of togetherness but also creates new memories and traditions that emphasize generosity and community spirit.

4. Incorporate Technology: If family members are far away, consider using video calls to include them in your celebrations. Host a virtual gathering where everyone can share their holiday experiences or even participate in a collective activity, like baking or crafting.

5. Adapt Gift-Giving: Instead of traditional gifts, consider experiences—like tickets to a concert, a cooking class, or a family outing. This not only creates new memories but also shifts the focus from materialism to shared experiences.

6. Create a Holiday Playlist: Music is a powerful way to evoke memories. Curate a playlist that includes both classic holiday songs and new favorites. One of my favorite new traditions is to play Christmas music while I make Christmas greeting cards for friends and family. Or you can play your holiday favorites it during your gatherings to create a lively atmosphere that blends nostalgia with contemporary vibes.

Embracing the Spirit of the Season

By embracing change and welcoming new traditions, we can treasure our memories but not be too caught up in feelings of longing or loneliness. This year, instead of longing for the past, let’s remind ourselves that it’s not the specific traditions that matter most, but the spirit of love, connection, and joy that our memories represent!
